Correction: In the May 1 edition, the Beacon inaccurately reported that Devin Crews, 17, of Roswell was arrested for possession of marijuana and being a minor in possession of alcohol. In fact, Crews was not charged with possession of marijuana.
On May 3, Roswell police were dispatched to the Red Lobster restaurant in reference to an alleged physical dispute. When the second officer arrived, the two involved in the physical altercation, identified as Ashley Hebb and Tori Wade, had already been separated. Hebb claims she was assaulted by Wade, and the officer inquired as to why Wade would do such a thing.
According to Hebb, her roommate Wade had fallen about $60 behind on some bills over the course of the last few months. Hebb decided that she would take Wade’s sunglasses as collateral. Wade went to Hebb’s workplace, Red Lobster, and demanded the “$500 sun glasses” back. Hebb told Wade she would return them when the bills were paid. Wade then told Hebb that she would just break her car window and retrieve them herself.
As the two continued to bicker, the argument moved into the front corridor. At that point, according to Hebb and other witnesses, Wade slammed Hebb’s head against a wall. It then took several employees to pull Wade off of Hebb.
The officer explained to Hebb that withholding property in return for payment is not legal, so Hebb gave the glasses to the officer. While the officer was interviewing Hebb outside of the Red Lobster, Wade’s mother, came up to the two of them and demanded return of the glasses, which were now in the possession of the officer.
Wade’s mother also reprimanded Hebb for allegedly punching Wade. The officer asked some witnesses, and no one claims to have seen Hebb punch Wade. Wade explained that her mom was the only one who saw Hebb punch her. The officer wanted to know why Wade did not call the police at that point, and Wade said she was “in the middle of calling you.”
Roswell dispatch would later confirm that no other 911 calls were made from Red Lobster. The officers, based on the stories of both individuals and testimony of witnesses, decided that Wade was the aggressor, so they arrested her. Wade’s mom said that it must be a “black and white thing.” She went on to say that the only reason her daughter was being arrested was because she is black. The officer then handed the sunglasses to Wade’s mom and transported Wade to jail. Wade was arrested for simple assault.
Pregnancy Test Pilfer
On May 4, Milton police were called to Wal-Mart to make an arrest. Sonia Garcia-Perez had allegedly wandered into the home pregnancy aisle and put a box of E.P.T home pregnancy kits in her purse. Two Wal-Mart loss prevention officers then confronted Garcia-Perez, but she darted into a fitting room before answering any questions. While in the fitting room, Garcia-Perez made gestures that made it seem like she was taking the pregnancy tests out of her purse and leaving them in the fitting room.
Garcia-Perez then left the fitting room thinking that she got the best of the loss prevention officers. However, the loss prevention officers are not easily fooled. They saw that the E.P.T. test was clearly still in Garcia-Perez’s purse and she had not used them, even though she had gone to the fitting room.
Garcia-Perez was then detained and arrested for theft by shoplifting.
